Transferable Skills: Your toolbox for future
What are transferable skills?
Transferable skills are the abilities and attributes that you can apply to different situations and roles, regardless of your industry or sector. They are not specific to a particular job, but rather reflect your general aptitude and potential. Think about them as your toolbox of certain capabilities that you have developed over the years and depending on the situation you can use one or mix of them to solve the issue at hand. Some examples of transferable skills are communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and adaptability.
Why are transferable skills important?
Transferable skills are important because they can help you succeed in any career path you choose. They can also help you cope with the changing demands of the labor market, which is constantly evolving due to technological and social factors. According to the World Economic Forum, the top 10 skills that employers will look for in 2025 are:
Analytical thinking and innovation
Active learning and learning strategies
Complex problem-solving
Critical thinking and analysis
Creativity, originality and initiative
Leadership and social influence
Technology use, monitoring and control
Technology design and programming
Resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility
Reasoning, problem-solving and ideation
As you can see, these skills are not tied to a specific field or occupation, but rather reflect your ability to learn, adapt, and innovate. These are the skills that will help you stay relevant and competitive in the future of work. You might be a great specialist in your field, but without some of the transferable skills under your belt, you still could struggle in tasks from outside your expertise. And don’t underestimate the importance of these skills outside of your professional environment. They are also very useful at managing personal challenges.
How can you develop transferable skills?
You might not think about them in this way, but definitely you already have some of these skills. I would encourage you to have a little reflection on what is in your toolbox already, how strong do you feel on the ones you possess, and what are the ones that you would like to add. If you are struggling with this analysis try thinking about the projects, tasks, and activities that you have completed or participated in, either in your work, education, or personal life. What skills did you use or learn from them? How did you overcome challenges or achieve goals?
Once you had your little analysis done, let’s see how you can further invest in them by following these tips:
· Seek feedback and guidance. Ask your colleagues, managers, mentors, teachers, or friends for their opinions on your strengths and areas for improvement. Listen to their suggestions and use them to enhance your skills. You can also seek professional advice from career counselors, coaches, or online resources.
· Learn new skills and update your existing ones. Take advantage of the opportunities to learn new skills or refresh your knowledge. You can enroll in courses, workshops, webinars, podcasts, or books that cover topics related to your interests or goals. You can also join online communities, forums, or networks that share your passions or aspirations. There is so many possibilities now that finding resources is not an issue. Actually, the problem sometimes is to concentrate on one thing that you want to work on.
· Practice and apply your skills. The best way to improve your skills is to use them in real situations. Look for opportunities to practice and apply your skills, either in your current role or in a new one. You can also volunteer, intern, or freelance for projects or organizations that align with your values or vision. You can also create your own projects or initiatives that showcase your skills.
